Chapter Seven
Rayden called upon decades of discipline to resist the silken provocation. If Sarah wanted to learn about control, heâd be happy to teach her. And if she actually created energy every time she came, theyâd be able to hook her up to a generator and take half of Sanctum off the power grid before he was finished with her. It had been so long since heâd indulged the carnal side of his nature, and Sarah appeared to be an apt and eager student.
Picking up a fat red berry, he held it out. âEat. Allen said you were famished.â A deep blush spread across her cheeks and down her neck. She reached for the berry. He pulled his hand back. âEat.â
âI can feed myself.â
âYouâve been doing for yourself for far too long. Relax and let me feed you.â She shivered, her green eyes turning dark and smoky. âWhat are you thinking about?â
She accepted several berries before she answered his question. âI wasnât sure if the vision was an indication of my new path or an actual glimpse into my future.â
âAnd now?â He refilled her glass and watched her lush red lips close around the straw as she took a long drink.
âI saw an actual event. At some point in the future, the vision will play out in reality.â
He inclined his head, acknowledging her statement without accepting the claim. Mutants were reported to have all sorts of mystic abilities. Yet the only person heâd seen demonstrate any real power was the spirit. âWhat changed your mind?â
âYour voice. The phrasing you used when you told me to let you feed me. You said something very similar in my vision.â
Did he want to know the specifics of her vision? Would his actions be shaped by what she revealed? It didnât matter. She honestly believed she was on some mythic journey. Why should he argue with such passion when their goals aligned so beautifully?
âSean was tracking Ceddrik, but why were you and Allen in that club?â
Her gaze darted toward the tray of finger food. âIâm feeling hungry again. Can I have half that sandwich?â
Though he was tempted to call her on her transparent attempt to avoid his question, he handed her half the sandwich instead. âHow did Allen know you were a virgin? Thatâs not a topic that comes up during the course of casual conversation.â She nibbled away at the sandwich, keeping her mouth full for as long as possible. He chuckled at her antics and pushed the tray aside. âWeâve got all night, sweetheart. Take as long as you like.â
She finished the sandwich and drained her glass, her thoughtful expression hinting at the mental whirl going on inside her head. Was she debating how much to tell him or making up a clever lie?
âSean and Allen followed me to the club. None of us had any idea Ceddrik would be there. Remember, I knew nothing about Ceddrik until after he took off with the dancer.â
âWhy were Sean and Allen following you?â He took the empty glass from her hand and knelt beside the tub.
